In a rare move within the world of venture capital, the startup Listen Labs—which specializes in market research using voice AI—has walked away from an already-signed funding round, amid ongoing negotiations to sell the company to customer relationship management giant Salesforce. This decision reveals the delicate calculations promising startups make between continuing to raise funding and capitalizing on tempting acquisition opportunities.

A Funding Deal That Collapsed at the Last Moment

According to sources familiar with the matter, Listen Labs recently signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C funding round at a $1.5 billion valuation, to be led by Menlo Ventures. However, this round never closed, as the company withdrew from the signed agreement—a move typically viewed with displeasure among investors given how exceptional it is.

The reason behind the deal's collapse is likely the ongoing talks with Salesforce regarding a potential acquisition worth nearly $2 billion. Nevertheless, these negotiations have not yet been finalized and may not result in a definitive agreement.

A Prominent Player in the Automated Customer Research Market

Listen Labs is among the most prominent startups in the field of automating customer research through AI, a sector experiencing rapid growth. The company was founded three years ago and generates annual revenue of nearly $30 million—roughly three times the revenue of its competitor Simile, which specializes in predicting human behavior.

Simile had announced in late July the closing of a $200 million Series B funding round at a $2 billion valuation led by Greenoaks, which likely established a new valuation benchmark that Listen Labs may seek to surpass should the sale negotiations falter.

How Does Listen Labs' Technology Work?

The company was founded in 2023 by Florian Jungermann, a former German national champion in competitive computer programming, and Alfred Wahlforss, founder of a previous recruitment company called Bemlo, who met during their master's studies at Harvard University.

The company's technology relies on using AI to:

  • Automatically draft survey questions.
  • Conduct interviews with customers via voice or video.
  • Convert the resulting conversations into ready-made reports and presentations, similar to what traditional researchers produce.

Major companies listed among the Fortune 500 rely on this type of research to gauge customer needs and their satisfaction with brands and products. However, traditional research is expensive and can take weeks to complete, whereas Listen Labs' technology reduces both time and cost, enabling companies to quickly understand customer reactions and improve their products more efficiently.

Among the company's clients are Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen.

Fierce Competition in the Market

Listen Labs and Simile are not the only players in this field; the sector includes other competitors such as Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. Approaches vary among these companies—some rely on automating interviews with real people, while companies like Aaru and Simile adopt a "synthetic" approach that uses AI to simulate human behavior and predict answers without conducting any actual interviews.

The Calculations of a High Valuation

Although acquiring Listen Labs could enhance Salesforce's AI capabilities in predicting customer needs, the giant may ultimately view paying a multiple of 67 times revenue as an excessive valuation. The company had secured a $500 million valuation when it announced a $69 million Series B funding round in late January led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from existing investors such as Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.

A number of investors anticipate that should the negotiations with Salesforce falter, Listen Labs will return to the market seeking a valuation of no less than $2 billion, reflecting the sector's confidence in the future of AI-powered customer research.
