When searching for an electric car, the factor of a reasonable price is becoming more common in the market day by day. However, combining a low price with high energy efficiency remains a rare occurrence. Buyers often find themselves forced to sacrifice one of the two advantages: either an economical car with a limited driving range, or a car with a long range at a high price. But German automaker Audi has decided to break this equation with its new A2 E-tron model.

A Competitive Price and Remarkable Efficiency

The A2 E-tron belongs to the compact crossover category, with prices starting at around £32,200 (approximately $45,000 USD), making it one of the most economical Audi electric cars to date. What's remarkable is that this price does not come at the expense of performance, as the car offers an extremely low aerodynamic drag coefficient along with multiple battery and drivetrain options, allowing for a driving range of up to about 645 kilometers with the optimal configuration.

Nevertheless, the bad news for car enthusiasts outside Europe is that this rear-wheel-drive model is currently designated for the European market only, with no announced plans to introduce it in North America in the near future.

An Aerodynamic Design That Breaks Records

Efficiency is usually linked to aerodynamics, which the A2 E-tron clearly confirms. Audi relied on a set of engineering solutions to reduce air resistance, most notably:

  • Door handles integrated into the car's body.
  • Air intakes carefully designed to improve airflow.
  • A fully enclosed underbody.
  • Elements to reduce gaps around the wheel arches.

These elements combined contributed to lowering the drag coefficient to 0.24, the lowest figure Audi has ever achieved in its history. The car also offers, for the first time in the brand's models, a bidirectional charging feature, which allows external devices to be powered via a port in the trunk, or to supply the home with electricity when a compatible wall charging unit is available.

Economical Consumption and a Long Range

With the optimal motor and battery configuration, the A2 E-tron consumes about 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers, while the longer-range model can cover a distance of up to 645 kilometers according to the European WLTP measurement cycle. This balance between economical consumption and a long range represents a key strength for the car.

A Modern Cabin and Smart Storage Solutions

Inside, the car comes with a panoramic curved MMI display that combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12.8-inch central touchscreen. Audi also highlights a magnetic mounting system known as Fidlock, which allows car owners to attach accessories such as cup holders and charging cable bags at designated points inside the cabin and trunk.

The company notes that this technology, familiar to cyclists for attaching water bottles without holders, appears for the first time in a production car.

Audi's Future Vision

This model comes after Audi backtracked last year on its commitment to a complete transition to electric vehicles, as the company opened the door to a mix of combustion, hybrid, and electric engines. Although the A2 may not appear soon in showrooms alongside its striking siblings such as the S6 Sportback E-tron, Audi has not entirely closed the door on expanding its availability in the future.

With this, Audi offers a practical model that proves combining a reasonable price, high efficiency, and a long range has become possible in the world of electric vehicles.
