Google earns most of its revenues and profits from online advertising, and while most sites rely on AdSense and its advertising network, it is the biggest winner in this sector. A study conducted by the News Media Alliance and published by the New York Times says that the Internet giant Google achieved $4.7 billion in 2018 from the news industry through the search engine and the Google News service. News Media Alliance President and CEO David Chavern believes that journalists who create content that brings in these huge revenues to Google deserve more money and consideration, which the alliance clearly points out.
This estimate did not include the value of personal data that the company collects from users who click on articles and who browse sites that include ads. The US House of Representatives held a session yesterday, Tuesday, on the issue of the relationship between major technology companies and the media. The hearings are expected to be attended by key industry players, including CEOs of major technology companies.
The study also says that about 40 percent of clicks on popular searches are for news articles, and the company doesn't pay anything for this type of content. Although the United States has not yet passed legislation to address the interaction between tech platforms and news outlets, the European Parliament in March voted in favor of a controversial copyright directive that would require companies like Google or Facebook to pay news publishers a share of the copyright, including the related revenue they receive from these types of articles.
