Microsoft Gains $3.2 Billion from Its Investment in Anthropic

Exceptional Returns from Microsoft's Bet on Anthropic
As part of its financial results announcement for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 (ending June 30), Microsoft disclosed a striking detail regarding the performance of its investments in two of the world's leading AI labs: Anthropic and OpenAI — both of which are fiercely competing to lead this emerging sector.
$3.2 Billion: The Payoff of Microsoft's Bet on Anthropic
The company announced that its investment in Anthropic generated a net gain of $3.2 billion in the last quarter alone, adding $0.33 to diluted earnings per share, which totaled $4.81. This investment traces back to November 2025, when Microsoft injected $5 billion into Anthropic as part of an integration agreement, under which the lab committed to using Azure services worth up to $30 billion over the coming years.
Notably, Microsoft does not revalue its Anthropic investment on a regular quarterly basis, making this disclosure exceptional and indicative of the scale of the gains realized.
OpenAI: A Mixed Picture Despite Large Figures
In contrast, Microsoft handles its OpenAI investment with regular quarterly updates. This quarter specifically, the company recorded a decline in the value of that investment of approximately $600 million, reducing earnings per share by $0.07. Microsoft holds roughly 27% of OpenAI, though it does not disclose the value of payments it receives under its revenue-sharing agreement with the company.
However, this decline had little impact on the overall results, remaining a marginal figure relative to the scale of Microsoft's vast business. The company posted quarterly revenues of $90 billion and net income of approximately $35.8 billion.
The Annual Picture: OpenAI Recovers Over the Long Term
When viewed across the full fiscal year, OpenAI's picture improves considerably. Microsoft's investment in the company throughout the fiscal year contributed total gains of $5 billion, adding $0.67 to annual earnings per share, which reached $17.95.
Nevertheless, the comparison between the two investments remains striking: Microsoft earned from Anthropic in a single quarter nearly as much as it earned from OpenAI over an entire year — a fact the company saw fit to explicitly disclose in its financial reports.
What Do These Numbers Mean?
These results embody Microsoft's strategy of hedging by distributing its investments across the most prominent competing AI labs, rather than placing all its bets on a single player. The figures reflect that:
- Anthropic's agreement with Azure has quickly translated into tangible financial value for Microsoft.
- The OpenAI investment remains profitable on an annual basis despite quarterly fluctuations.
- Microsoft's overall financial results remain strong and largely unaffected by any partial investment volatility.
With annual revenues exceeding $331 billion and net income of $133.7 billion, Microsoft reaffirms its position as the largest financial backer of the AI revolution, benefiting from both sides of this intensifying technological race.
