Substack Unveils Tool to Detect AI-Written Content

A New Era of Transparency in Newsletters

Transparency around the use of artificial intelligence in content writing has become a growing concern for both readers and publishers alike. Amid this rising debate, Substack — the independent newsletter platform — has announced a significant move: integrating Pangram's AI-generated content detection tool directly into its app, with the goal of giving users a clearer picture of what they're reading.

How Does the New Tool Work?

The feature allows any user to scan posts, comments, and replies within the Substack app, providing an estimate of how much content was written by a real person versus how much was generated by AI. The tool covers any piece of content exceeding one hundred characters in length — whether a full article, a short note, or a simple reply to a comment.

In addition, writers themselves can run the tool on their drafts before publishing, giving them the opportunity to review the results and dispute them if they believe the assessment is inaccurate. Writers can also add an optional note explaining their writing process and the extent to which they use AI tools.

Not a Punishment Tool — A Call for Authenticity

Substack has emphasized that the goal of this feature is not to restrict the use of AI or penalize those who rely on it, but rather to foster a culture of disclosure and credibility between writers and their readers. In line with this, the platform is encouraging publishers to include something akin to a "methodology statement" explaining how they create their content.

This philosophy was summed up by a Substack executive during a conversation with Pangram founder Max Spiero, who noted that the platform has always handled everything for writers except the hard part: having an idea worth reading, caring about, and sharing. That original idea is something no software can produce.

Short-Term Risks, Long-Term Gains

This decision is not without its near-term risks. It could reveal that a number of popular newsletters on the platform are not written entirely by their owners, which may erode subscriber trust and cast a shadow over the platform's reputation as a home for high-quality content.

Over the long term, however, this move is expected to:

• Cleanse the platform of low-quality automated content known as "AI Slop"
• Motivate writers to commit to originality and distinctiveness
• Build deeper trust between readers and the content they consume
• Establish transparency as a standard in independent publishing

Substack Joins a Broader Wave of Digital Transparency

Substack is not moving in this direction alone. It joins a growing number of digital platforms that have begun labeling and flagging AI-generated content. Social media platforms now mark AI-produced images and videos, music streaming services have recently followed suit, and some have gone as far as imposing restrictions on tracks identified as machine-generated.

This broader trend reflects a growing conviction within the tech industry: that users deserve to know whether they are engaging with genuine human creativity or algorithmic output, and that transparency on this matter will soon become a standard expectation rather than a luxury.
