Ebay President and CEO Jamie Iannone discussed the potential for digital currency acceptance on the online auction site and non-fungible token (NFT) sales in an interview published as recently as February 27. While Ebay does not currently accept cryptocurrencies but will in March, Iannone stressed, the company plans to dive into all of these things, payments, advertising, and our focus categories. Ebay CEO Jimmy Iannone: “Without any official announcement, people started trading NFTs on the platform.” There are a few online business giants, such as Amazon and Ebay, that crypto proponents hope will one day support cryptocurrency payments in the future.

Ebay has been a topic of conversation for years as cryptocurrency advocates believe the digital asset and online auction platform will greatly benefit each other. On May 11, 2021, Bitcoin.com News reported on Ebay allowing NFT sales on the auction site. During his interview with The Street, Ebay CEO Jimmy Iannone explained that NFT sales are simply done without much thought.

“We changed our policies last year so you can trade NFTs on the platform, and basically, you know, Ebay is a place where people have things to sell or to show,” Iannone said. "Even without announcing anything or doing anything, people started trading NFTs on the platform. It reminded me of many years ago when people started selling cars when we didn't even have a car business at that point."

“So we're seeing the same kind of things,” the Ebay executive said. Ebay to look “deeper” into alternative payments in March The Ebay CEO interview then turned to accepting digital currency and Iannone confirmed that the company continues to “evaluate what other forms of payments we should take on the platform.” Iannon explained that the company focuses on youth and trends such as making collectible sneakers. After being questioned about accepting cryptocurrencies, Iannone noted that “(Ebay) does not currently accept cryptocurrencies.”

However, the auction site's CEO added: “On March 10, we'll be diving into all of these things, payments, advertising, and our focus categories.” Ebay continues to be a giant in the world of online sales, reporting revenue of $10.27 billion in 2020. Revenue is significant but well below the $386.1 billion Amazon made that year.

Iannone concluded that Ebay will continue to be a prominent company as people exchange goods online. “Ebay will be the place where people trade goods, whether physical or digital,” Iannone explained. “So, over time, you know, we want this to become a sustainable market.”
