Amazon is flooded with counterfeit and unsafe products

Amazon has removed hundreds of counterfeit and unsafe products from its site after a Wall Street Journal report found that thousands of third-party seller listings did not comply with federal safety standards. Despite this, thousands of dangerous and illegal products are still available on the site, as confirmed by the media.

More than 4,000 items for sale on Amazon have been declared unsafe by federal agencies, including 2,000 toys and medications. The magazine also identified 157 items that had previously been banned on Amazon and one of the products it tested for lead levels still exceeded federal limits. In light of the report, Amazon has reworked or reduced 57% of the 4,152 issue listings.

But the investigation underscores concerns about the company's failure to monitor dangerous products from third-party sellers on the site. There are hundreds of merchants on the site who sell their products to millions of users and consumers around the world. But the problem with them is that many of them are unknown and do not respect applicable laws and standards, which is why they unfortunately sell their counterfeit and dangerous products to consumers.

The laws surrounding Amazon's liability for third-party products are complex. In June 2018, a judge ruled that Amazon was not liable for damages resulting from exploding batteries purchased through the store. But Amazon's liability to third-party sellers is changing. In July, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals ruled that Amazon may be liable for harm caused by products made available on the site. For its part, Amazon said that it has developed tools to prevent suspicious and unsafe products from being listed in the store: “We are investing significant resources to protect our customers and build robust programs designed to ensure that the products offered for sale in our store are safe and compliant.”
