Facebook and all its services such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Oculus were down for several hours yesterday, with the social media giant citing “network issues” behind the widespread global outages. Reports indicate that the outages were related to DNS (Domain Name System) issues, with cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs writing that DNS records “were pulled from global routing tables yesterday.”
Other reports indicated that Facebook attempted to manually restart servers, and that employees were unable to enter buildings due to widespread outages. The services are only starting to come online now, The Verge reports, but it could be hours before global access is restored across all Facebook apps. It is one of Facebook's worst outages to date, affecting its 2.89 billion global users, as well as those who use other Facebook-related services.
In 2019, Facebook's outage lasted more than 14 hours, while an outage that occurred in 2008 — when the service had just 150 million users — lasted about a day. For proponents of blockchain and decentralized networks, today's outage is the latest high-profile example of how centralized systems can fail on a massive scale. Blockchain offers a potential alternative to such centralized models, with user-managed distributed networks that have no single point of failure and are resistant to downtime or oversight.
Blockchain builders, Bitcoin enthusiasts, and proponents of decentralization have used the opportunity to critique Facebook's centralized systems (or "Web 2") via Twitter — which has largely remained a strong online presence amid Facebook's woes — and via emailed data. “Today’s complete collapse of Facebook and Instagram, among other apps, illustrates the problem of centralization,” Matthew Gould, founder and CEO of Unstoppable Domains, said via email. Through the decentralized system or Network 3.0, users can transfer their data and contacts to other services, where they will not be dependent on Facebook or log in to Facebook to contact their friends and family or use their favorite applications.
