A Step Toward Digital Transparency

Digital advertising has become increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence tools — whether for generating images, editing visual content, or designing professional visuals at a fraction of the cost of traditional photography. However, this technological capability carries inherent risks related to consumer deception, as users may not realize that what they are seeing is not a real image of a product. To address this issue, Google has announced a new feature that allows users to know whether the ad appearing before them was created or modified using artificial intelligence.

How Does the New Feature Work?

The feature will be added to the "My Ad Center" panel — an interface available to users worldwide by clicking the three-dot menu or the information icon that appears on ads across Google's various services, including Search, YouTube, and Discover.

This panel previously allowed users to block or report ads, and to view information about the advertiser and the reasons an ad was shown to them. Now, alongside these options, a clear label reading "How this ad was made" will appear, indicating whether artificial intelligence was part of the creation or modification process.

Advertiser Responsibility for Disclosure

This decision represents an expansion of the disclosure policy that Google had previously applied exclusively to election-related ads. The new mechanism operates through two pathways:

  • Ads created using Google's own tools: Disclosure is activated automatically, with no additional action required from the advertiser.
  • Ads created outside Google's platform: The advertiser bears the responsibility of manually indicating AI use through a dedicated control option, as Google will not conduct any independent verification.

In certain markets, an ad may be automatically classified as AI-generated if local regulations require it.

Why Does This Matter to Consumers?

Although Google explicitly prohibits misleading advertisements, the use of AI to create composite or digitally altered visual content is not prohibited in itself. This is precisely where disclosure becomes important — it gives consumers the opportunity to form an informed opinion about what they see, particularly in e-commerce contexts where product images play a pivotal role in purchasing decisions.

A more transparent advertising environment strengthens user trust and helps raise industry standards overall, especially as the capabilities of AI image and video generation tools continue to advance, producing content that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality with the naked eye.

Is This Measure Enough?

Legitimate questions remain about the effectiveness of this mechanism, particularly since Google relies on self-declaration by advertisers rather than independent technical verification. Critics argue that leaving the disclosure decision in the hands of the advertiser weakens the credibility of the initiative. Nevertheless, this step represents a positive shift toward greater accountability, and may pave the way for stricter standards in the future amid growing regulatory pressure on digital advertising and social media platforms.
