A Shocking Quarter Rattles a Tech Giant

IBM's latest quarterly results weren't a complete surprise — CEO Arvind Krishna had already warned investors in a rare public letter that performance would fall short of expectations. Yet the scale of the shock was still significant when the numbers revealed genuine cracks in the business model of a company more than 125 years old.

Although the company maintained what would be considered enviable financials by most measures — reporting revenue of $17.2 billion and net income of $2.2 billion with margins exceeding 57% — those figures failed to meet Wall Street's expectations, triggering a 25% single-day collapse in the stock price, the largest one-day decline in the company's history.

Mainframes at the Heart of the Crisis

The core of the problem lies in IBM's Infrastructure segment, the backbone of its revenue, which saw a sharp 42% decline in mainframe sales. This isn't an isolated figure — it carries cascading consequences across the rest of the business.

CFO Jim Kavanaugh explained that IBM earns three dollars in software revenue for every one dollar of mainframe hardware it sells. This means that a decline in hardware sales inevitably leads to an even larger loss in associated software and services revenue, making the crisis deeper than the headline numbers suggest.

Is AI the Culprit?

Krishna was quick to deny that artificial intelligence or broader technological shifts were behind the decline, insisting that what happened was a temporary deferral, not a permanent abandonment. According to his account, dozens of customers who had planned to upgrade to new mainframes during the quarter chose instead to redirect their budgets toward other hardware, amid a sharp rise in the prices of data center components and personal computers — increases ranging from 15% to 30%.

This price surge is partly driven by enormous demand for components such as RAM, a demand fueled by the race to build AI infrastructure. Major companies including Dell, HP, and even Apple have confirmed they were forced to raise prices due to these supply chain pressures.

What Is IBM Telling Investors to Restore Confidence?

The CEO offered several reassurances during the investor call, most notably:

  • Some customers who deferred purchasing decisions have already returned and completed their orders in the current quarter.
  • There is no concrete indication that IBM's customers intend to abandon mainframes altogether.
  • The impact of this poor quarter will weigh on annual growth guidance, but an upward trajectory will return.

Mainframes — Dead or Still Alive?

There is a striking paradox at the heart of this story: many have predicted the end of mainframes for decades, yet they continue to occupy a central role in the infrastructure of banks, governments, and large enterprises. The question being asked today is whether AI will be the genuine threat that accelerates their decline — or whether, like the technologies that came before it, it will prove unable to dislodge these enduring machines from their throne.

Ultimately, the real answer won't be found in Krishna's statements, but in the results of the quarters ahead. If the deferred customers return and complete their deals as promised, IBM will have validated its narrative. If they don't, this may mark the beginning of a new chapter in the story of major technological transformation.
