DuckDuckGo is now the default on Android in the EU

DuckDuckGo will soon be offered as the default search engine option on Android devices across the EU. European regulators are forcing Google to provide Android users the option to choose their default search engine. The option to choose default search providers has always been available on Android devices but it is something users have to look for on their own in the settings menu.

Google's previous practice of setting itself as the default search provider on its operating system was illegal under EU antitrust rules, as a result of which the EU fined the company $5 billion. Now Google must change its practices and require users to choose their default search engine when setting up a European Android device that has its search app built-in. This step would strengthen DuckDuckGo's strength in the European market and create a growing demand for it, especially since privacy is considered the most prominent point in convincing users to use it.

When Android users in the EU boot up a new device, they will be presented with three Google alternatives to choose from when providing the default search, and DuckDuckGo will be at the top of the list in all countries. Other options, which vary across the EU, include Info.com, Yandex, Qwant, GMX, PrivacyWall, Givero, and Seznam. Bing will only be offered as an option in the UK, which may be an indication of where Microsoft's search engine sees itself most profitable.
