DROPIDEA | دروب ايديا - Methods and types of lighting: Book Light

In this quick article, we will talk about a lighting technique called Book Light, or book lighting, if translated correctly. In this article, we will talk about the importance of this technique and why it is widely used in cinematic works. Methods and types of lighting: Book Light Cinematographers always strive to obtain distributed and soft lighting on the element to be lit, which means that if the intention is to light the actor supposedly from the right side, it is not correct to form a very sharp shadow on the actor’s face. Therefore, attention is paid to methods of dispersing the lighting and making it as soft as possible, and the technique that we will talk about today is one of those methods that filmmakers use to disperse the lighting to achieve that result.

Book Light technology relies on directing light towards several elements as follows: The lighting source (regardless of the type and source of the light itself) is directed towards a lighting reflector, and the reflectors we are talking about are fabric made of bleached cotton muslin or unbleached muslin. After directing the lighting towards these reflectors, the area or angle of the light will become wider, and the intensity of the light will become lighter, so that we will not produce sharp shadows. Then we install a lighting diffuser between the actor and the reflective surface through which we reflected the light, so that the final appearance becomes like an open book, like the example below, which we previously published a few days ago on our Instagram account.

The greatest benefit of the Book Light technology is, as we talked about above, the greatest benefit is dispersing the light and making its spread area larger. The larger the light source, the softer the light. This technology also helps to control the degrees of light as needed. In this quick video from Epidemic Sound, we can see the mechanism of setting up lighting in the same way, with a nice comparison during the stages of lighting distribution: Remember this technique next time you prepare lighting, and try to use it in your next works so that it takes the lighting mechanism in your scene to a whole new stage.
