Twitter may turn into a decentralized social network in the future!

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced a research effort to explore a decentralized version of the microblogging platform. The idea behind decentralization is to create services that are not controlled by a single organization, so that there is no single point of failure and no one enforces the rules. This step comes at a time when the company is being criticized for its sometimes lax and sometimes strict policies, while the number of believers in the idea of ​​decentralization and encrypted digital currencies is increasing. The important thing is that there is already a decentralized blogging and publishing protocol that is accepted and used by a large number of people, called ActivityPub, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which governs the protocols underpinning the web. ActivityPub emerged from Pump.io, a software engine that supports federated messaging using a concept called activity streams.

One user of the protocol is a social networking service called Mastodon. Instead of one central, company-owned website, it's a collection of independent servers that run the underlying hosting software. Twitter seems to want to do something similar, and has announced the hiring of a research team called BlueSky. It will finance the project, which will take many years, but will not direct it.
