Metaverse, Microsoft, and 31 other companies have united to form an organization to promote the creation of open standards regarding Metaverse technology. The organization, called the Metaverse Standards Forum, will focus on developing standards to make each of the online metaverses interoperable, which would allow these worlds to communicate perfectly. While the metaverse is a concept that each company interprets and builds to its own will, some believe it is important to connect these individual worlds.
This is why Meta, Microsoft, and other companies, like Epic Games, came together to found the Metaverse Standards Forum, an organization created to promote interoperability of these metaverses. According to the launch PR statement: [The body] will focus on practical, work-based projects such as implementation prototypes, hackathons and plug-ins, and open source tools to accelerate testing and adoption of metaverse standards, while developing consistent terminology and deployment guidelines. The forum will not set standards by itself. The organization will serve as a hub to integrate various standards development organizations (SDOs) in areas including virtual reality, graphics, interactions, and others.
The creation of such a group is viewed by some as a statement about the consensus in these companies on the importance of creating open standards for the concept of the metaverse. On this topic, Neil Trivett, president of Khronos, an organization that is part of the group, stated the following: The metaverse will combine diverse technologies and technologies, requiring a constellation of interoperability standards, created and maintained by multiple standards organizations. While the group states that it is an open organization, available to all interested groups for free, there are some big names who did not appear in the group.
Apple, one of the world's largest technology companies with an interest in virtual reality and augmented reality (AR) technology, has not yet joined the forum. It has not yet joined other important game-based metaverses, such as Roblox. According to some experts, this shows that even with an organization promoting standards on the subject, unifying the metaverse, or the set of worlds that make up the metaverse, will be a difficult task given the diversity of companies building platforms geared toward it.
