YouTube develops a tool to remove copyrighted music from videos
By Admin
One of the biggest issues facing YouTube creators recently is “copyright strikes,” which is where a creator or other entity claims that you have illegally used their original material (generally music) in some way within your video. According to YouTube's system whenever a copyright claim is made and approved, it also enables the claimant to collect any revenue generated from that video as a result which has inevitably led to some false claims, where even the slightest hint of a music clip, for example, has been used to siphon advertising dollars away from the creators. You can see how this caused a headache but conversely, you can also understand how YouTube is looking to cater to copyright holders, and provides a more enforceable and fair system, even if it leads to some abuse of the rules.
YouTube has been working to address these concerns over the past year, and last month as part of an update to YouTube Studio, it rolled out a new process that will give creators the option to automatically remove a claimed section from their video and free their content from any such claim. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki flagged the upcoming functionality in her platform update in November, where she also noted that it had reduced the financial incentive for requiring "very brief, unintended use of music" to address key concerns. The auto-trim option isn't ideal, since it will mean cutting off sections of your video, but it provides another easy way to keep your content active, and may be useful for content creators, depending on the case.
In this regard, YouTube deserves credit for working to develop and improve its systems, in order to keep it in good standing with traditional publishers (and potential advertising partners) and ordinary users. This balance will likely never be perfect, but YouTube has made significant progress, showing that it is listening to its creative community and working to address key pain points.
