WhatsApp hack in India and its relationship to the Middle East

India's main cybersecurity agency has asked users to update WhatsApp on their phones after discovering a potential security vulnerability in older versions of the messaging app. The potential issue could be caused by a video file sent from an unknown number, which opens the door to major harm to users. News of the new problem came shortly after WhatsApp admitted that its software was being used to install spyware on phones.

During the past months, the Middle East has been an arena for using these loopholes to access the contents of the phones of politicians and military personnel, and reports have confirmed that there is more than one Israeli company specializing in creating spy viruses that has succeeded in using them to target Palestinian activists and its opponents in the region. Facebook, which owns the application, announced a fix for the new vulnerability in the system a few days ago, but this is not the first time that vulnerabilities have been discovered that could make it easier for a caller to access the user's device. In this case if users open the video file they received, the software will install itself on the phone in a similar way to Pegasus malware, which is believed to have been used against journalists and activists.

The agency added that the vulnerability allowed attackers to access phones and make changes to the device, regardless of its geographical location. This issue may require users to open the video file, unlike the more advanced Pegasus which activated itself through a vulnerability in WhatsApp's video calling function and did not require answering the call. About 400 million users in India use this application, which has expanded to use in the field of business and startups in developing countries.
