The debate began when Musk put out a poll on Twitter on Friday asking his 79.2 million followers to vote on whether they think Twitter adheres to the principle of free speech, which is Musk's opinion.

Many different protocols can be used to build decentralized alternatives to Twitter, including Mastodon, Diaspora, Misskey, Friendica, Pleroma, and Twister.
