Mozilla is offering all Firefox users the opportunity to delete their personal data, specifically telemetry data, which most of the tech industry does not consider personal data. This step comes in light of the keenness of the organization developing the browser to make it better in terms of privacy than other browsers. The move was required under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which went into effect on January 1, 2020.

The law expands the rights of California residents to manage their data, as they can access their data, find out if it has been sold, and request its deletion. The CCPA only applies to California citizens, however as happened with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, some companies are expanding the rules to include users elsewhere, including Mozilla, which has supported the CCPA from the beginning. If you use Firefox in private browsing mode, none of this telemetry data is collected.

What's more, the company has "always given people easy options to disable telemetry in its browser" and imposes "strict limits on how long we retain telemetry data." However, Mozilla is now expanding user deletion rights to include this telemetry data. So Firefox will now provide “users with a way to request deletion of Desktop Telemetry directly from the browser and a way for Mozilla to perform that deletion.”

As mentioned earlier, the option to request deletion of your data is available to all Firefox users worldwide, not just California residents who are covered by the CCPA, which is a good move. #Privacy #Firefox
